A once in a lifetime board

Over the past 30 years, we've come across many "special" boards.  However, when we happened across this one, we were almost speechless.

The wood species is Bubinga.  We have seen curly Bubinga fairly often and also from time to time seen waterfall Bubinga.  But we've never run into a piece that had both curl and heavy waterfall grain.  To find such graining is rare.  To find it in a 10' long board is almost a miracle.  As you can see from the pictures, the graining even continues on into the outer sapwood.

We are reserving this board for those client(s) who truly appreciate the beauty of wood and are seeking something that will be totally unique.

This board is 10' long and ranges between 24 and 27" wide and is approximately 1" thick

Because we respect the rarity of such a piece of wood, we are setting some guidelines for its usage.

  • First and foremost, what ever the design, the wood should be the focal point of the design
  • We would love to keep both natural edges in place but will trim one edge if need be. But we will NOT remove both natural edges. There is too much natural beauty in the wood to cut it into a "square".
  •  We will NOT cut the board into anything other than:
    • Its full length - for a bar, serving side board, etc
    • two pieces
      • One about 80" long that preserves the spectacular center burl. This could be used for a desk top, serving sideboard, cabinet top, etc.
      • The remaining piece would be about 40" long for a small table top
    • Three pieces - each about 40" long for 3 separate table designs. One of which would have the center burl in it.
    • In cutting the board, we will hand cut across the board to follow the grain pattern.  Thus the ends of the pieces will have an organic line that compliments the natural edges.
  • Finish - The finish will be multiple coats of hand rubbed oil followed by hand waxing to bring out the depth of the beauty of the wood.  We will NOT spray the top with a hard acrylic or poly.
  • UPDATE: (  January 30, 2006 ) a client commissioned us for a table ( you can see the table here ).  Thus we will be dividing the board into 3 sections, of which 2 are currently left for future commissions)

NOTE: we wiped down the board with mineral spirits so that you can get an idea
of the coloring and grain pattern of this board.

The white line shows approximate cut location for a 80" piece and a 40" piece

These are the approximate cut lines to yield 3 40" long pieces
