A hall table created from a curly big leaf maple burl

This client wanted a unique table for the entry hall to their home that would also compliment the antique tapestry on the wall. Other than size ( approximately 70" long, 34" high and 15" deep), they gave us a free hand to select the wood and overall design.

We had acquired an entire burl of spectacular, curly Big Leaf Maple and by bookmatching a piece we were able to come up with the length needed. We drew from our supply of 200 year old walnut to use as the complimentarty wood and legs. The base and legs were designed to have clean, simple lines so that they would not take away from the beauty of the maple and would fit in the clean lines of their entry hall.

The finish consisted of around 9 hand rubbed coats of tung oil and then 5 more coats of a tung oil / varnish mixture that would offer the final protection for the surface. Each coat was sanded back so that the final finish had a great amount of "depth" without obscuring the beauty of the grain in the wood.
